To mark his 80th birthday, musical theatre legend Stephen Sondheim appraises his long career and dissects his own lyrics from West Side Story to Sweeney Todd.

In Finishing The Hat – a title borrowed from one of his most autobiographical songs – Sondheim provides a forensic account of the lyric-writing process. Stephen discusses the lyrics for several of his major musicals from 1954 to 1981, including West Side Story, Gypsy, Company, A Little Night Music and Sweeney Todd. He offers an illuminating insight into the lyric-writer's art, as well as a number of warm and witty anecdotes about the remarkable figures with whom he has worked.

Stephen also discusses his relationship with his mentor, Oscar Hammerstein II, and his collaborations with talents such as Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Laurents, Jule Styne, Ethel Merman and Harold Prince.

Penetrating and self-deprecating, thoughtful and witty, Finishing the Hat is not only an informative look at the art and craft of lyric writing, it is also a window on musical theatre history since the 1950s.

Part 1 - We hear how his mentor, Oscar Hammerstein, influenced the early career of the budding composer and lyricist, and how he came to collaborate with Leonard Bernstein on West Side Story.

Part 2 - Sondheim recounts his experience of writing the lyrics for Gypsy - and of working with the indomitable Ethel Merman.

Part 3 - He discusses his first outing on Broadway with his own music - A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum - and the critical importance of getting the opening number just right.

Part 4 - Sondheim looks back on the development of A Little Night Music.

Part 5 - He talks about the inspiration behind the music and lyrics of his 'love song to London' - Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Las tontas es un espectáculo lleno de diálogos absurdos y canciones dramáticas teatralizadas con el estilo desopilante que caracteriza a Gimena Riestra y Verónica Díaz Benavente. Un show que busca, a través del humor más audaz, reivindicar la inocencia como piedra fundamental del alma humana.

Dos mujeres sin padres ni hijos. Sin hombres ni pares. Dos mujeres que esperan a alguien que nunca llega. Cantan y se cuentan historias para esquivar el dolor y no caer en la cuenta de que finalmente, han sido traicionadas.

Dos mujeres que, con el único objetivo de evitar el dolor, han acordado vivir en la tontera.

“La idea de "Las tontas, un recital" surgió en el año 2003 con el deseo de construir un espectáculo donde, a partir del humor y lo musical se pudiera dar cuenta de la riqueza que encierra la mirada del niño. Revalorizar la inocencia, la ingenuidad, la capacidad de sorprenderse día a día. Así surgieron Las tontas, dos señoritas que acordaron inventarse un mundo propio, un mundo sin dolor. Dos seres que sólo pueden atravesar el desencanto y hablar de él cantando. Por este motivo las canciones del espectáculo (las mismas provienen de diversos géneros como el tango, la música antigua española, la zarzuela, la ópera y el pop) hablan del desamor, del dolor, y del desencanto, todo aquello a lo cual Las tontas decidieron no hacerle caso” comentan Gimena Riestra y Verónica Díaz Benavente.
