1948 American musical feature film from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The Pirate was a flop when it was released, and MGM lost $2 million dollars (or something in that range).The public just wasn't ready to see Judy Garland, the archetypical "good girl," in such an adult role. The score, by Lennie Hayton, featured the song "Be a Clown" by Cole Porter. The score was nominated for an Academy Award for Original Music Score, losing out to another MGM musical, 'Easter Parade', also starring Judy Garland.

Screenplay by Frances Goodrich from the 1942 play by S. N. Behrman

Based on the play 'The Philadelphia Story' by Philip BarryHigh Society would mark the first on-screen pairing of Sinatra and Crosby, two of the most popular entertainers of the 1940s and 1950s. The film also marked the final acting role for Grace Kelly before she became Princess of Monaco, released three months after her marriage to Prince Rainier III.

Sinatra was 40 and Crosby 53 while playing the love interests of Kelly, who was only 26 during the filming. She was actually the second consideration for the part of Tracy Lord, the original choice, Elizabeth Taylor, being unable to commit
