Krzyzacy (Teutonic Knights), Poland’s first rock opera in many years,
based on Henryk Sienkiewicz’s classic novel of the same name, had
its world premiere at Warsaw’s Kongresowa Hall on Dec. 30, 2011.
Krzyzacy marks the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald in
1410. The setting is dark and gloomy black-and-white, and the action
unfurls at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. The main storyline
revolves around the love between Danusia Jurandowna ( played by
Olga Szomanska) and Zbyszko z Bogdanca (played by Maciej Silski).
The show features some of the biggest names in Polish rock, including Artur Gadowski from IRA, Maciej Balcar from Dzem and Pawel Kukiz from Piersi.
Krzyzacy was created by Marcin Kolaczkowski who wrote the script and directs the show, Hadrian Filip Tabecki, who composed the music, and Jacek Korczakowski, who wrote the libretto.
